What Happens After You Win Your Social Security Disability Case?
Winning your Social Security Disability case is a major victory — especially if you’ve waited months or even years. But now you might be wondering:
“What happens next?”
Here’s what you can expect after an SSDI approval — including when you’ll receive backpay, monthly benefits, Medicare, Medicaid, and more.
1. You’ll Receive a Notice of Award Letter
Within a few weeks of approval, the SSA sends you a Notice of Award, explaining:
- Your monthly benefit amount
- Your disability onset date
- When benefits will begin
- How much backpay you’re owed
- When to expect your Medicare eligibility or Medicaid
2. You’ll Get SSDI OR SSI Backpay
SSDI money benefits you are entitled to will be paid back to the date you protectively filed your disability claim, with the judge having discretion to pay back a little bit further. Keep in mind, the Social Security Administration (SSA) withholds the first 5 months of payments on Social Security Disability Insurance claims. You’re likely owed backpay — benefits that should’ve been paid during your waiting period. SSI payments are paid back to the date you filed.
- Backpay is typically paid in a lump sum
- Most clients receive their backpay within 60–90 days of approval.
3. You’ll Start Getting Monthly Disability Payments
Your SSDI monthly check is based on your work history and earnings. Once approved:
- You’ll receive a check or direct deposit monthly
- Payments are usually sent around the same date each month
- Use this SSA payment calendar to check your date
4. You’ll Qualify for Medicare (SSDI Only) and/or Medicaid (SSI only)
After 24 months of SSDI eligibility (from the onset date), you’ll qualify for Medicare — even if you’re under age 65.
- Part A (hospital): Free
- Part B (doctor visits): Optional, with a monthly premium
- Part D (prescriptions): Optional
If you are eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and win your claim, then you will receive Medicaid as soon as your found disabled by SSA
5. SSA May Review Your Case Periodically
Even after approval, SSA performs Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs) every few years to confirm you're still eligible.
- Frequency depends on how likely they think you’ll improve
- Your benefits won’t stop unless they find significant improvement
Bonus: Can You Work After SSDI Approval?
Yes — but it’s tricky. SSA offers a Trial Work Period (TWP) to test your ability to work without losing benefits.
Always talk to a lawyer before trying to work after approval.
