How Social Security Disability Is Calculated in 2025

When you apply for Social Security Disability (SSD), one of the biggest questions you probably have is: “How much will I get if I’m approved?” The answer depends on several factors, and the calculation is different depending on whether you qualify for SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) or SSI (Supplemental Security Income).

How SSDI Benefits Are Calculated

SSDI is based on your work history and the Social Security taxes you’ve paid. The Social Security Administration (SSA) looks at your average lifetime earnings before your disability began.

Here’s how it works:

  • SSA uses your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME) to determine your benefits.
  • They apply a formula to calculate your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA)—this is the base monthly benefit you’ll receive.
  • The longer you’ve worked and the more you’ve paid into Social Security, the higher your benefit will be.

Important Note: SSDI does not consider the severity of your condition when calculating your payment—it’s strictly about your earnings history.

How SSI Benefits Are Calculated

SSI is different. It’s a needs-based program for people with limited income and resources.

  • The maximum federal benefit rate in 2025 is around $943/month for individuals (slightly higher for couples).
  • Your payment is reduced by any countable income you have.
  • Some states add a supplemental payment on top of the federal rate.

Example: If you qualify for SSI but also receive some income, SSA subtracts that from the maximum amount to determine your monthly check.

What About Back Pay?

When your case is approved, SSA owes you back pay for the months you’ve been disabled while your application or appeal was pending.

  • SSDI Back Pay: Paid back to your filing date, with the possibility of up to 12 months before filing if you were disabled earlier (minus the 5-month waiting period).
  • SSI Back Pay: Only goes back to your filing date.

👉 Back pay can be thousands—or even tens of thousands—of dollars depending on how long your case has been pending.
