Understanding Disability Claims for Chronic Pain and Fibromyalgia

A woman in a black bra is hugging her knees and crying.

Living with chronic pain or fibromyalgia can be debilitating—affecting your ability to work, sleep, and maintain daily activities. But does it qualify for Social Security Disability benefits? At Crossroads Disability, we’re here to help individuals just like you win the benefits you deserve.

Does Chronic Pain Qualify for Social Security Disability?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) doesn’t list “chronic pain” or “fibromyalgia” as standalone impairments in the Blue Book. However, if your symptoms are severe and documented, you may qualify.

To qualify, you must show that:

  • Your pain has lasted, or is expected to last, 12 months or longer
  • It significantly limits your ability to perform work-related tasks
  • Your medical records include diagnostic testing, treatment history, and evaluations from medical professionals

Tip: Fibromyalgia claims are stronger when supported by a rheumatologist's diagnosis, medical records showing consistent symptoms, and statements from treating physicians.

What the SSA Looks for in Fibromyalgia Disability Cases

SSA uses SSR 12-2p to evaluate fibromyalgia claims. Your case must meet certain criteria:

  • Widespread pain in all quadrants of the body
  • Repeated manifestations of six or more fibromyalgia symptoms (fatigue, cognitive issues, etc.)
  • Evidence from a licensed physician
  • Longitudinal medical records that support your condition

Tips to Strengthen Your Disability Claim

If you’re applying for SSDI or SSI due to chronic pain or fibromyalgia:

  • Keep a detailed symptom diary
  • Maintain consistent treatment with your healthcare provider
  • Document side effects of medications
  • Get functional capacity evaluations
  • Include non-medical evidence (family or employer letters)

Common Mistakes That Can Hurt Your Claim

  • Applying without full medical documentation
  • Failing to follow treatment plans
  • Missing deadlines
  • Not appealing a denial
  • Not hiring an experienced Social Security Disability lawyer
